On 27 June in Airforce station Jammu, in wee hours, India sustained it’s maiden drone attack on any military station. Reportedly, there were two consecutive low intensity blasts in the interval of five minutes of each other. IAF probed and stated that, IEDs were dropped at the Airforce base with the help of the drones. One dropped on the roof of one building which caused minor damage, another was dropped in a safe site, causing no harm. The very next day also Indian Army spotted two drones around midnight, fluttering over the Kaluchak and Ratnuchak bases. Soon the army opened fire at them and the drones were forcefully retreated. The maneuvering of drones is not new to India, however the target site is. We have account of weapons, drugs and explosives supplied into Punjab region by the help of drones. It’s for the first time a military station was targeted, which is worrisome as far as the military security is concerned. Drones being an unmanned carrier, can be used in various destructive purposes. There can be dumping of harmful biological as well as chemical weapons by it. Public sites including economic niches may be targeted. Presently, as the technology evolving so elegantly, it’s giving the terror organizations an upper hand to operate aerially on their target sites. In November last year, the military war between Armenia and Azerbaijan pragmatically proved that, drones are the future of military warfare. It’s the drones deployed by Azerbaijan at hand, made every strategy and maneuver of the Armenian forces futile, which forced them to surrender. The victory of Azerbaijan gave an indelible lesson on the importance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which India can’t afford to ignore, keeping in mind that it shares boundaries with Pakistan and China, both being potent enemies, especially China: the emerging hub of technology. In this contemporary of technology boom, we have to be extremely advanced in technology. It’s not man power that will determine results of war, rather who has the most sophisticated technology. India must not only think to counter such attacks in future, but more importantly, it must induce the utilization of UAVs in the forces. We have to scale up to neutralize the unconventional aerial warfare, equipping smart-sensing anti-drone technologies.
